Konpira Maru - Mt. Midoriyama Pét-Nat (2021)

Let the pét-nat flow!  The latest addition to the stable of fizzy fun from Al & Sam is a single-vineyard offering from Richard Carson’s Eurangie Park Vineyard, just down the hill from the Konpira Maru lair in Whitlands.  The origins of this wine are disputed, Sam believes it was his idea…Al knows for a fact it wasn’t, but what a truly inspired blend it is!  Dolcetto is a fruit-forward pleasure machine and with racy Chardonnay component and exotic Gewürztraminer touch the boys are definitely onto something special.  Al & Sam call this their ‘party pét-nat’, and it is hard to disagree with that assertion, even if it is a bit of a lame moniker.

The fruit was harvested in the wee early hours of the first of March and soaked for 10 hours entirely whole-cluster.  The fruit was then pressed fast and furious but only hitting the go-button a few times, 25% more pressure was used in 2021 as opposed to the smoke tainted 2020 vintage, resulting in more color and flavor.  The fermentation in tank was also fast and furious so nailing the picking date was imperative.  It was bottled with 16 grams per liter of residual sugar for a more bubbly offering than the 0ther 2021s.  The bottles were inverted, chilled, eventually hand disgorged, topped, re-topped, re-capped, cleaned, dried, labeled and boxed up for your drinking pleasure.  No additions were done nor anything taken away aside from a bit of wine lost during the disgorgement.

Konpira Maru started, as many great ideas do, as an idea born from two mates having a beer at the pub.

Working in the retail, production and education sectors of the wine industry for many years, we were searching for our own creative outlet. Sharing similar viticultural, winemaking and beer-drinking values, we set out on our vinous journey and from these humble beginnings, produced the first vintage in 2014, which resulted in just 600 bottles.

We set out to make interesting wines with minimal intervention and maximum care. Wines that were full of character, with a focus on affordability and a high-drinkability factor.

Our goal was simple – to produce wines we wanted to drink and to inject a little fun into an industry often accused of taking itself too seriously.

Now we make wine from the South Burnett and Granite Belt regions in Queensland as well as Kilmore in Victoria, with the help of our crew of amazing growers. In 2016, we took on our own Whitlands vineyard,  sitting high above the King Valley. Here we farm Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris organically on beautiful red soil, surrounded by stunning sub-alpine Eucalypt forest. A magic part of the world.

We hope you love ‘em as much as we do.

Drier than the 2020 but with more fruit given the harder pressing ratios. Fruit salad explosion aromatically, with that primary watermelon vibe dominating. Plenty of carbonation which balances the juicy fresh fruit, and mid pallet texture the Gewürz brings perfectly, but also makes it almost too easy to drown a bottle or three.
